Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare

  • Keep tattoo wrapped and bandaged for 2-4 hours.
  • If you were given Recovery Derm Shield, leave bandage on for up to 24 hours. Proceed with aftercare instructions once bandage is taken off. *Remove bandage if redness or irritation occurs.

Washing:

  • Use the soap provided or UNSCENTED SOAP (dial, softsoap etc.)
  • Lather soap in hands and apply lather on fresh tattoo with warm water. *Repeat process until all fluid, ointment or dried blood is washed off the tattoo.
  • Rinse clean with cool water to close pores. *It will appear that ink is leaking from the tattoo, this is normal.
  • Let air dry for 30-60 minutes before applying any moisturizer.

Moisturizing:

  • For the first 5-7 days apply a light layer of the provided salve (pea to nickle sized drop) to your clean tattoo. Blot extra off. Tattoo should be as moisturized as the surrounding skin; not wet, sticky or shiny.
  • Once the tattoo starts to peel switch over to unscented lotion.
  • If you cannot use the provided ointment, use lotion 2-3 times a day for the duration of the healing.
  • We recommend Aveeno, Eucerin, Curel etc. No oils, body butters or heavy creams.
  • Wash and moisturize the tattoo at least 2 times a day until peeling is completed. (Peeling could take 2-3 weeks and 4-6 weeks for a fully healed tattoo)
  • *Over washing and moisturizing can cause scabbing.

General Rules for Healing

  • Do not pick or scratch at tattoo while it’s peeling. It is normal for it to itch. Once peeling stops take care of skin as you normally would.
  • DO NOT re-bandage tattoo or cover with plastic wrap. It forms a barrier on your skin and can cause it to retain fluid and become hot. These are the perfect conditions necessary for the growth of bacteria which can lead to infection.
  • Your tattoo will be sensitive to rubbing and sunlight for the duration of the healing process. Avoid tight clothing for the first few days. Ibuprofen will help calm irritation and swelling.
  • It is safe to exercise but keep it light cardio and weight lifting on areas away from the tattoo, wash tattoo immediately after working out.
  • Personal hygiene is essential to a healthy tattoo but be careful with body wash or scented soap, it could burn and irritate the tattoo. Let water hit above the tattoo and trickle down.
  • For 2 weeks: No direct sunlight or tanning. Please protect your tattoo with sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher. No beaches, Jacuzzi’s, sauna/steam rooms, pools, lakes, bathtubs or submerging under water for long periods of time.
